Encompassing a vast expanse of 421.658 square miles, it serves as the ancestral home of our tribe, a community with deep roots in Lakota culture. The heart of our sovereign nation lies in the capital town of Fort Thompson, located in close proximity to the awe-inspiring Big Bend Dam. This dam, a remarkable feat of engineering, harnesses the power of the Missouri River, forming the breathtaking Big Bend Reservoir, also known as Lake Sharpe. Established as part of the Pick-Sloan Plan in 1944 for flood control and hydropower, it stands as a testament to our enduring connection to the land and the waters that sustain us.
